Hinzu kam seine elektrisch verstärkte Gitarre, mit der er einen neuartigen und richtungsweisenden Sound schuf. Ebenfalls neu waren seine Instrumentalstücke, die er, nur durch das Klacken der Kronkorken unter seinen Schuhsohlen begleitet, auf seiner Gitarre spielte. Hooker spielte in dieser Zeit meistens solo.
Diese Box würdigt das Vermächtnis eines schwarzen Musikers, der Vorbild für unzählige weiße Gruppen und Stars war. John Lee Hooker als Blues-Legende zu bezeichnen, ist deshalb nicht übertrieben. Auf zehn CDs veröffentlichen wir 16 seiner Original-LPs sowie zusätzlich rund drei Dutzend Bonustracks. Anders als zahlreiche seiner Kollegen verzichtete Hooker sein Leben lang auf Zugeständnisse an den populären Geschmack. Mit rauer Stimme sang er von Einsamkeit und Verwirrung, begleitet von simplem Gitarrenspiel und dem rhythmischen Stampfen seiner Füße. Er wurde 1917 in Clarksdale im US-Bundesstaat Mississippi geboren; im zutiefst ländlichen Süden der USA entwickelte er sein musikalisches Handwerk zur Perfektion. Wie viele andere Bluesmusiker wurde auch Hooker von mehreren Produzenten um seine Einnahmen gebracht. Seine Antwort war, noch mehr Platten aufzunehmen, einige unter Pseudonymen wie Texas Slim oder John Lee Booker. Sein Einfluss auch auf jüngere Generationen wurde 1980 mit einem Auftritt als Straßenmusiker in dem Erfolgsfilm ''Blues Brothers'' deutlich. Wie kaum ein anderer Blues-Mann hat er die Musikszene der Nachkriegszeit geprägt. Die Rolling Stones, Animals, oder Canned Heat sind nur einige von zahlreichen Bands, die in ihrem Sound maßgeblich von Hooker beeinflusst wurden. 1990, elf Jahre vor seinem Tod, feierte er mit seinem Album ''The Healer'' nochmals einen großen Erfolg: Er verkaufte davon 1,5 Millionen und bekam zum ersten Mal einen Grammy für seine Interpretation von ''I'm in the Mood''.
